WHAT IS DISTRACTING YOU FROM SITTING AT THE FEET OF JESUS! LET’S NOT MISS IT!

One reason we are so harried and hurried is that we make yesterday and tomorrow our business, when all that legitimately concerns us is today. If we really have too much to do, there are some items on the agenda which God did not put there. Let us submit the list to Him and ask Him to indicate which items we must delete. There is always time to do the will of God . If we are too busy to do that, we are too busy — Elisabeth Elliot

I have found that hurriedness and busyness are the enemy’s best kept distraction from God. And when I feast my eyes on a busy schedule (my to-do list), I find that I lose HIM in the motions of everyday, and pursuing the Lord gets lost in the robotic rhythm of monotony of the whichevers and whatevers. It’s when I cannot take a moment of gratitude in prayer or peace – because of a need to cross out the next to-do — that running too fast becomes a rain cloud on a restful moment — Relatable? I love the scripture John 14: 27 as Jesus says, “Peace I give you. I do not give as the world gives.” The loud voices of the world pressure us to keep running, achieving, performing. Yet, if you stop and listen to Gods word – theres an assurance of peace you can’t find anywhere else. Amen!

Martha was cooking up a storm in the kitchen – trying to time the meat, vegetables and bread, all to be ready at the same time. She set the table, filled the cups, folded the cloth napkins and arranged fresh flowers. As she worked, she grew increasingly frustrated and annoyed by her sister, Mary who seemed to be doing nothing at all….

“Her sister, Mary sat at the Lords feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come help me.’ But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing to be concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:39-42)

Like Mary and Martha let’s not be so tempted to do FOR God that we neglect the good work of sitting WITH God. If you find yourself so overwhelmed that you cannot hear, or cannot seem to find time to meet with God. Do some heart searching. Anything that keeps you away from him is worth re-evaluating. Be near Him today! Smile, this one’s on HIM!❀ Amen! God bless.πŸ’•

  1. Great post. Also I’ve noticed in my life and some of my friends that it is when we prioritize spending time with God in prayer and reading of his word that, that is the times in our lives when we are doing the most for God. The reason being is because we are more spiritually energized and our focus is centered on God and not on the work. God then opens opportunities for us that we wouldn’t have seen if we hadn’t been prioritizing time with him. Again great reminder to spend time with God.

  2. Dallas Willard once advised John Ortberg to β€œruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life.” Eugene Peterson once said, β€œHurry is a form of violence practiced on time. But time is sacred.”

  3. I absolutely love the story of Martha and Mary; it is one I meditate on regularly. I have had periods in my life when I have identified with both of them. I would imagine I am not alone in this. Loved this post. Thank you and God bless!! xoxo Regina

  4. You are very right it’s so easy to lose your way and put the lords words on the back burner because of always being busy. For myself I try to include his word and a prayer in some of the everyday things I do so that it’s normalized and almost second nature even if I’m busy it just comes on out. For example when I drive on the highway I ask the lord to grant me and everyone on the highway safe passage to and from where they are going so that everyone can make it home safely to their loved ones.

  5. I love this! I was just talking about how the story of Martha and Mary keeps coming up in my life and how it resonates with me. Within the first paragraph, I knew it was yet another reminder to find that balance of doing and resting in God’s word. Such a lovely reminder. Blessings!

  6. Good lesson for us, always. If we make time for God only when we can “squeeze” Him in, then we are missing the point. It is when we spend time with Him intentionally, that He will then speak to us. It is not about God having time for us; rather, it is about us making time to spend with Him. Love eveyone’s comments, as well. Blessings.

  7. I fully agree with you,J! people have become so busy in their materialistic world that they have forgotten humanity and humility and therefore are away from HIM.

  8. The line between doing good things because we are called to and just going about busy work can get blurry for me sometimes. It stays much clearer on the days I remember what Psalm 118:24 tells me: This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it (NIV).
Each day is a gift from our Creator. Keeping this truth in the proper place in my heart and mind keeps me on a much more ordered track.
Thank you for blessing us (as you always do!) with these thoughts you’ve shared,
    Pastor Chuck

  10. So profound! It’s sad how busy and hurried we the people of the earth are in endless pursuit of the affairs of this life without God. We have no time and the patience to sit before God to present our daily agenda. We make our plans all by ourselves, we execute them but when we think we have arrived, something happens and we begin to ask questions; “where did we go wrong?” God needs to have a hand in our agenda. Sometimes we look at people sitting before God as lazy time wasters as in the case of Mary. But no time before God is a waste. We get the strength we need to function well when we get back to work.

  11. Hebrews 12:1 also apply to this context
Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us…..God bless

  12. You’re right.
Most people do not SIT with Him(God).
Just like Martha, everyone seem so BUSY these days.
If God is not in your life, then you need to re-evaluate your life.

  13. This is great. I actually had just written a little on this story as well and I would love to use your perspective as well. Mary did what was right, but I loved how Martha created the space for Mary to be with Jesus. Thanks for your perspective!

  14. I find if i return the day back to the Lord to order it according to His purpose and grace for the day, He fills my heart with peace when He interrupts my plans for the day. I only need listen to His voice and follow His steps through the day. Believe me, I know when I do and when I don’t.
